German police detained on Saturday about 400 protesters in the western city of Stuttgart. The protesters were trying to block access to a party convention held by the anti-immigration party Alternative for Germany. Riot police reportedly used pepper spray on several hundred leftwing protesters who had temporarily blocked a nearby highway and burned tires on the road leading to the venue. Around 1,000 officers are said to have been deployed.
